Young diplomats on our 2024 Model United Nations conference
This year, our Institut Montana Model United Nations conference on the Zugerberg brought together around 100 passionate delegates from 10 schools originating from Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, and for the first time, Zambia and Mexico
At our opening ceremony, we had the honour to have esteemed speakers: Mr. Stephan Schleiss, a Zug Cantonal Council member, and Dr. Peter Lindenmann from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
The delegates explored "Pathways to Prosperity and Unity in Eradicating Poverty" and after 3 days of debates and discussion, they concluded with a resolution emphasizing:
- The urgent need to eliminate poverty, focusing on the negative effects of economic sanctions from wealthy nations that keep people poor and hinder progress.
- Creating a Global Fund to support countries recover from these sanctions and calls for a UN inquiry to examine their impact on people’s well-being.
- Pushing for reforms in international financial institutions and stresses the importance of access to healthcare and education, along with support for climate resilience in developing countries.
Coming all the way from from Zambia—Zoe, Charmaine, and Bwalya— expressed their enthusiasm for traveling to new countries, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, practicing diplomacy, and enhancing their research skills. This global spirit of connection was echoed by Diego, a participant from MUNMA school in Mexico, who reflected on the unique dynamics of the conference. He noted:
"It's quite different from the North American model, which has distinct procedures, primarily focusing on moderated sessions rather than resolutions. Resolutions are typically addressed in the final session, with about 10 minutes for amendments. It's fascinating to observe how Institut Montana handles different procedures. It's enjoyable to meet people from all over the world, including Africa, beyond just Europe, whereas in Mexico and perhaps the US, there aren't many conferences with international attendees."
Diana, President Chairwoman of our Model United Nations, shares her statement:
"Participating in Model United Nations gives the delegates a chance to develop not just their understanding of global politics but also their public-speaking and collaborative skills. So, they can apply the things they learn during the IMZ MUN in their daily lives as well."
Heartfelt thanks to our dedicated MUN Chair, Secretariat, team, and director Paul-Johan Widén for making this inspiring event a success!
